Preschool Playground

McGuffey’s Preschool Playground is an opportunity for parents and children to come together for socialization, play, and informal learning.

McGuffey’s Preschool Playground is a free program for parents and children ages 5 and under which meets weekly from spring until fall from 9:30–11:30am on Mondays on McGuffey Foundation School’s playground.

Opportunities for solitary and group play include a large sandbox, playhouse, sports field, climbing and play structures, riding vehicles, athletic equipment, and a basketball court. Art activities will be provided in the spacious shaded picnic shelter and parents are encouraged to bring drinks and snacks. There is no fee, but children must be accompanied by a parent. Older siblings under 9 are also welcome during the summer.

Each week we’ll provide a short enrichment activity, which children can participate in at their leisure. We’ll continually be updating the enrichment calendar as activities are added.

Hope to see you there!

April 11: Welcome back

April 18: Painting
We’ll use a variety of methods to create works of art. Smocks will be provided.

April 25: Oceans
We’ll talk about the creatures that live in the ocean, play with toys from the sea, and create an ocean to take home. We might get a bit wet, so wear play clothes!

May 2: Chickens
We’ll learn about chickens, how they grow, what they eat, and all about their eggs. We should even have baby chicks to hold!

May 9: Clay, play-doh, and moon sand, oh, my!
Let’s sculpt, build, and construct with different soft materials. We’ll have a wide variety of materials and tools.

May 16: Weather
We’ll talk about weather, and  make our own rain sticks so that we can sound like the rain!

May 23: Measuring
Cups, spoons, measuring sticks, and scales. We’ll explore how we determine the size of the world around us.

May 30: Memorial Day, no Preschool Playground

June 6: Plants and flowers
We’ll collect and examine flowers, plants and leaves, look at them up close and take them apart to see what’s inside. We’ll make sunprints, draw and press flowers, and even taste some yummy fruits, leaves and seeds!

June 13: Bugs
Catch, observe, identify, and draw bugs. There will be plenty of bug activities to keep our young entomologists entertained.

June 20: Cooking
What does an oat look like before it becomes oatmeal? How do apples become applesauce? We’ll spend some time rolling oats and using a food mill as we watch food change from one form to another.

June 27: Music
Come try out a variety of instruments! We’ll be playing music all morning long, and we’ll even make our own instrument.

July 4: Independence Day, no Preschool Playground

July 11: Puppets
We’ll have a huge selection of puppets, marionettes, and a puppet theatre.

July 18: Water play
Kids should bring their bathing suits because we’re going to get wet! We’ll have sprinklers, a water table, and plenty of other wet activities.

July 25: Birds
Let’s talk about birds! We’ll have books and puppets that relate to our topic, and we’ll even make some bird feeders to take home to our feathered friends. We might even bring one of the baby chicks that visited earlier this summer—they’re all grown up!

August 1: Reptiles and amphibians
Join us for some informal learning about reptiles and amphibians. What is the difference between the two? We’ll do a craft, listen to frog sounds, and might even have a fly-eating visitor!

August 8: Lego
Build as you wish, or make a tower that can withstand the elements. We’ll talk about what makes a building strong, and might even put a few to a wind test!

August 15: Nature scavenger hunt
Put on your explorer hat and see if you find all the things on the list! Lists will be picture-based so even the youngest can participate.

Additional topics to be announced soon! Be sure to check back.
