Fifth and sixth graders tried to design the ultimate spinning top!
Fifth and sixth grade students tested tops that they'd constructed out of pizza pans, washers, paper plate holders, and more; collecting and analyzing data on the effect of different top characteristics such as mass, diameter, distribution of material, and launch techniques.
People make tops that are good for different reasons. Tops designed to be colorful when spinning have different traits than a top designed to be stable or long-spinning.
After identifying certain purposes for tops such as longest-spinning, smallest, containing the most energy, or best to look at, students will design, produce, and test tops to determine the most successful in each category.
