25 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders attended the Ohio Model United Nations, and brought home two awards!
The 6-7-8s have just returned from a triumphant weekend at the Ohio Model United Nations in Columbus. Our 25 students represented six nations: Argentina, Guinea-Bissau, Italy, Kiribati, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam. Last fall, the delegations researched and wrote resolutions incorporating the primary international concerns of their nations. Proposals included, respectively, re-affirming the Convention on the Rights of the Child, re-distribution of personnel and supplies to combat infectious diseases in Africa, an attempt to promote international cooperation against rising immigration and crime in Europe, a global recycling effort to increase the availability of potable water, establishment of an observer seat for Islam, and a call for sanctions against the United States and other polluters for flouting the Kyoto Protocol in the face of global environmental emergency.
During the winter, these same delegations wrote opening and closing
speeches in support of their resolutions. They practiced
parrying the tough questions, and learned to project the strength of
their voices - even outside and in the cold. When they presented at OMUN,
they emoted well and sparked great debate. Two eighth graders won trophies
for their efforts: Drew Campbell for Outstanding Delegate, and Mary Jolly
for Outstanding Leadership. Kudos to all - they looked smashing in their
suits and formal outfits and had a ball of a weekend!
