04.14.06Fifth through eighth grades toured an Islamic mosque and learned about Shia and Sunni culture. As a part of both Art and Social Studies classes, fifth through eighth grades visited West Chester's gorgeous Islamic Center. Our tour guide took us through the Hall of Mirrors, the mosque itself, and the attached Pre-K7 school. Students observed the architecture and design of the mosque, which was designed to reflect the Spanish/Moorish style. Exterior features included a minaret and moon symbols on the high points of each building. The interior of the prayer hall contained many examples of Arabian calligraphy and mosaicwork. There were beautifully colored persian rugs instead of chair or pews in the prayer hall with a high golden-domed ceiling overhead. The students heard first-hand about the Five Pillars of the Islamic faith, saw how daily prayers are done, and received answers to some great questions about things like the place of women in Islam and how the local Shia and Sunni communities interact. We thank the Center very much for their time and accessibility.
