Middle school kids cleaned up in the stock market game. 10 teams. 10 weeks. 10 winning portfolios!
Every fall and spring for ten weeks, McGuffey fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders spend time in and out of class carefully tending their stock investments. Along with thousands of students from all over the United States and around the world, they are participating in the Stock Market Game, a real-time simulation in which students manage a portfolio of $100,000, making stock trades, short sales, and mutual fund investments on the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange, or Nasdaq. The game in this area is administered by the University of Cincinnati Center for Economic Education and Research; McGuffey competes in the middle school division against teams from schools in southwest Ohio for prizes that include trips, cash awards, and pizza parties.
McGuffey students, in teams of three or four, investigate companies,
study the effects of current events and market trends
on stocks, and rely also on their own knowledge of
what sells and what doesn’t
to come up with winning investment plans. The skills
they practice mimic the real world: they research,
make decisions, communicate, practice math, social
studies, and language arts, all the while watching with particular interest
to see how current news events and business decisions affect their investments.
The goal, of course, is to win, but the larger goal is to give students
a front-row seat for American business and personal investing. Ultimately,
everyone is a winner.
