05.16.08Pirates of PenzanceCongratulations to all involved in last night’s performance of The Pirates of Penzance! The energy and excitement was contagious as the audience enjoyed the hilarious saga of Frederick, who because of a small error by his “nurse” Ruth, became apprenticed as a small boy to a “pirate” instead of the intended “pilot.” As the play opens, Frederick is 21 (or so he thinks!) and, at last free of his indentures, is able to wed the winning Mabel. But, alas! He soon discovers that his calculations are in error, and because his true natal day is February 29, he is but a lad of 5 and a bit, and not free to marry her at all until a day many years hence. Sadness, confusion, and mayhem ensue. Bluster and battles between the brave pirates and the determined, but somewhat inept, police take place, with lovely young maidens caught in the middle. With aid from the Modern Major General, there is resolution and a “happily ever after” ending for all. Applause at the final curtain was thunderous as the cast took their final bows. Special thanks go to Charlotte Loflin for shepherding the cast through the task of learning the music and to Becky Howard for her deft direction.
