STEM Summer Camp

This summer McGuffey will be offering a STEM Summer Camp, where we will explore
architecture and Design

Each camper will get to design using Google Sketchup and then bring their virtual creations to reality by making them with various materials. Design suggestions include home floor plans (then created with foam-core board and other materials), and furniture for an outdoor classroom (then created with wood and hardware for use at McGuffey’s outdoor science classroom). Students are encouraged to design and create according to their particular skills and imagination. All levels of experience with Google Sketchup are welcome.

Date: Monday through Friday, June 18—22, 2012
Time: 9:00am—12:30pm
Location: McGuffey Foundation School
Ages: Any student who has completed 3rd—7th grade
Cost: $95 per student (includes materials)
Minimum 5 students, maximum 12 students.

For Registration, please contact Heidi Schran or Liz Woedl.

It’s time to SOAR!

It’s that time of year again, when the students at McGuffey spend part of their recess running or walking for a good cause! The program is called SOAR—Students Outside and Running.

Students run or walk as many miles as they can during lunch recess in the next four weeks, and try to collect sponsors for each mile. All donations collected will be combined and given to the Oxford Community Choice Food Pantry the first week of June.

SOAR begins Monday, April 30th! Please make sure your child comes to school with appropriate footwear.

Pledge forms and details of a Saturday SOAR hike/run on Miami’s trails to follow!

How to Make Big Critters and Robots with Paper Mache

1.  First you construct a figure from stuff you found at home. Masking tape is your friend.

2.  Then you tear up newspaper and use wallpaper paste (a.k.a. whale snot) to stick it all  over the outside of your project. It gets on your clothes.

3.  Let it dry for a few days and its ready to cover in colorful tissue paper. Some of those results will be published SOON.

Josh Haag makes robots do cool things!

McGuffey Alumni Josh Haag Stopped by to say hello and to share videos of the industrial automated robotics he’s been working on. It fun to know that our kids can go from drawing robots to designing ways to use them in the big world. Josh and his brothers, Nathan and David were students at McGuffey in the mid 1980s.

Greetings from Glen Helen—again!

Welcome, Elizabeth!

Next year the Pre-Primary class will include Kindergarten, which will bring our enrollment to 20–22 students. Because of this, we will have increased classroom space and will need to add a third teacher.

We’re very excited to announce that Elizabeth Taylor has agreed to come on board to fill this position!

Elizabeth has been teaching Kindermusik to our students this year. She is a natural choice, as she is so familiar with our classroom culture, and will be able to teach Kindermusik while she is here.

Elizabeth is a classically trained opera singer who sang with the New York Opera. She has been teaching Kindermusik to young children in Oxford for many years. She and her husband have two sons who will both be at McGuffey next year. We’re very excited about the music, and so much more, that she’ll bring to our classroom.

Welcome, Elizabeth!
