Tomorrow is spring picture day!
In the fall, the preschoolers had their school pictures taken by Donna Danoff, a local photographer and McGuffey parent. They turned out beautifully, and several families requested the opportunity to have photos taken in the spring. Per request, tomorrow Donna will be here to take spring photos!
Donna will only photograph children whose parents make a request. If you are interested in having your child photographed, please email Donna today. There is no obligation to purchase photos if you request your child be photographed.
Please review the attached sheet for more information and clothing tips and say “cheese!”
Glen Helen
Glen Helen Outdoor Education Center, near Yellow Springs, is where students from all over Ohio get a “down to Earth” education. Each day’s experiences will include field trips and activities that cover such areas as pioneer skills, music, baking, caring for wildlife, hiking, games, and drama. Our 3/4/5/6 students will be there for 3 days and 2 nights, April 18—20.
If your child is attending Glen Helen, you should have received an information packet. In this packet is a medical form which is due at the office today, Monday, April 15th. If you need an additional packet, please contact Heidi Schran.
Columbus Zoo visits Miami
The Zoology Club is bringing Education Specialists—and animals—from the Columbus Zoo to campus this Wednesday, April 4, 5:00 p.m. They will meet in Room 102, Benton Hall. All are invited—free of charge—to the presentation and informal question/answer session that follows.
Tie dye
While the weather felt more like summer than spring, we broke out the tie dye. Each child in school had a chance to dye their own shirt, and the result was a spectacular array of colors and designs.
Special thanks to Ingrid Schreiber for coordinating this activity!
Come hear our instruments!
On Friday, March 30, the third and fourth graders will share their handmade instruments with the McGuffey Community. The students will take the outdoor stage at approximately 12:30pm, following lunch. All Community members are welcome to attend. Some students will perform short pieces they have composed, and instruments will be available for gentle hands to explore.
This marks the end of our unit in science on Sound. We are beginning this week to study Simple Machines and will use shovels, wheelbarrows, Legos and K’nex.
Pi Day
What a wonderful day we had on March 14th to celebrate Pi Day. Students, teachers, and schools around the world celebrate the number pi (3.14…….), the ratio of the circumference to the diameter for any circle. It is also, ironically, the birthday of Albert Einstein.
We began our celebration at McGuffey by hearing the story of Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi. Then we had some partner activities. The Pre-Primary and 3/4 found out that the circumference is 3 times and a “little more” the diameter. 1/2 and 5/6 made Japanese tato envelopes and sent Pi Day messages to friends and family. Then we all went to the basketball court and formed the “Great Circle of Pi” and sang Happy Birthday to Albert Einstein. Art students unveiled a giant mural of Einsteins.
Students also had the chance to “dress up” for the day with tattoos and t-shirts.
Of course, at the end of the celebration, we all got to eat some great chocolate pies and cheese cake.
Kindermusik
This month in Kindermusik, the preschoolers are singing farm songs while focusing on matching a steady beat with their bodies, voices and instruments. By developing the skill to keep a steady beat, they also help develop their language and math skills!
Inhibitory control is our other focus in Kindermusik this month. Regulating one’s body and speech is a vital life skill that leads to great confidence. By singing, playing instruments, dancing—and then STOP! Learning self control becomes a fun game.
Cloud Club update
We’re now half way through this year’s Cloud Club events. Remaining on the calendar are Les Miserables at the Aronoff Center in Cincinnati, and Wicked at the Victoria Theater in Dayton. Next year’s Cloud Club calendar is taking shape with Peter Pan, Jersey Boys, and Blue Man Group already on the schedule.
